Slavery Statement

We understand and agree that slavery is an important issue, and the Royal Company of Merchants stands against racism in all forms. Given the history of the Company, and the trading activities of its members and benefactors in the 18th and 19th centuries, we are currently researching our history with a focus on the slave trade in Scotland. We have as yet found no evidence of direct involvement in slavery but consider it not unlikely that indirect involvement may have occurred in some form.

We recognise that, whatever direct or indirect links to the slave trade may be found, it is important for us to understand them and their impact on the activities of the Company. Once we have a better understanding of the historical situation, we will be in a position to develop forward plans to highlight any injustice and to help educate our young people to ensure that they learn from our history and can develop a better future for all.
