Essentially, the Merchant Company is a membership organisation actively involved at the heart of the city in educational and charitable works. Widely regarded as the foremost and most prestigious business organisation in Edinburgh, it is also Scotland’s most pre-eminent livery company.

Today, the Company’s Membership of over 600 enjoy the privileges and ancient traditions of one of Scotland’s most significant societies. Members – both men and women – are drawn from a range of backgrounds and ages. Two thirds of the Members are currently active in business, either as owners and managers of SMEs or as employees of larger companies. All types of business are represented, including professions such as accountants, lawyers, doctors, dentists as well as the traditional merchants.

The Merchant Company also has a national dimension as one of Britain’s leading livery companies. Close links and friendship are maintained with other companies in London, York, Sheffield and Bristol.
